Notes from the ADSG Meeting at the AAA, 12/4/05, Washington DC

Present:  Rachel Casiday, Marlene de Rios, Jorg Fachner, Shea Michael Anderson, Mac Marshall, Chelsea Voytek, Ann Acheson, Brian Kelly, Doug Goldsmith, J Bryan Page, Walter Randolph Adams, Mimi Nichter.

Several issues were discussed at the meeting:

1. Website:  We are all appreciative of the hard work that Gilbert Quintero has been doing to keep the website up and running. There have been over 2000 hits to the website in the past year, and so it is time to improve this valuable resource. We decided to create a bibliographic resource on alcohol, drugs and tobacco for the website. The following people have volunteered to submit information:

Hallucinogenic drugs: Marlene de Rios

Methamphetamines:  Shea M. Anderson

Club drugs:  Brian Kelly (Claire Sterk and Rob Carlson were also named as resources for this topic)

Heroine/ Cocaine: Doug Goldsmith

Tobacco:  Mimi Nichter, Rachel Casiday

Kava/Betel:  Mac Marshall

Alcohol: Dwight Health, Gilbert Quintero

As discussed, there would be three types of bibliographic data compiled:

-         Titles of anthropological articles/books on each of these topics

-         Important review articles in the field

-         Articles/books published in other disciplines which are particularly important

-         Syllabi on alcohol, drugs or tobacco (or weeks from a syllabi, if appropriate)

Please send these to Gil Quintero who is building the site.

2. Biodata on ADSG members:

Although we have over 90 members, only 11 people have submitted a short bio for our website. Please check this out and submit your information!

3. Newsletter:  After Kristy Bright and Larry Michalak stepped down from the role of newletter editor, no one has stepped up to fill this role. Rather than have a separate newsletter, our decision was to include news items on the website, including article and book announcements, call for papers, conferences, thought pieces and articles (solicited or unsolicited).

4. Dues: We have over $700 in our treasury from past dues, although we are no longer collecting fees for joining. Following a discussion, we have decided to initiate a “Best Paper Award” both in the undergrad and grad category. The winning paper(s) can be put on the website. The winners would receive a cash prize, though the details were not yet worked out. Walter Randolph Adams has graciously volunteered to coordinate this committee.

Renaming of the Interest Group:  It was suggested that tobacco should also be included in the name of the group; this suggestion was passed unanimously. The new name of the group is the “Alcohol, Drug and Tobacco Study Group”.

Thanks all for attending!
